Nuon commences carbon capture pilot program in Netherlands

EBR Staff Writer Published 09 February 2011

Nuon has commenced a carbon capture pilot program at its power plant in Buggenum in the province of Limburg, Netherlands.

The pilot project, which requires an investment of around EUR40m, will last at least two years.

Nuon said that it is the first energy company in northern Europe to set up a pilot plant for CO2 capture in combination with coal gasification that is being used in the Willem-Alexander power plant in Buggenum. .

The company added that producing gas from coal and capturing the CO2 from it creates a cleaner fuel for the generation of electricity.

Nuon aims to acquire knowledge and gain more experience of solutions through the trial for reducing CO2 emissions.

The pilot is one of the trials that parent company Vattenfall is carrying out in the field of CO2 capture.

Nuon has received a subsidy of EUR10m for this through the Unique Opportunities Scheme (UKR) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation.
